There were huge queues as a £1 million new Home Bargains store with its own garden centre opened in Tamworth last weekend. Home Bargains and Garden World was officially opened at 8am on Saturday, March 26 and staff have described its launch day as “mega busy” and “heaving”.
The company has invested around £1 million into the new Ventura Park store, located next to Aldi and near to the new Costa Coffee drive thru at the former John Lewis site.
There are 33 aisles and even an outdoor garden centre. Creating 116 new jobs, the store will employ 120 staff, with some staff and management transferring from other local stores.

When asked how opening weekend went, Jack Donohoe, the new store manager, said: “Absolutely fantastic weekend!! We have been beyond heaving and the feedback from customers has been fantastic!”
The new store has gone down a treat with our readers.
Honor Lewis said: “Very impressed with the friendliness and wide range of products. Apart from a bit of a wait to get off the car park – which I totally appreciated and didn’t mind as I’d been able to do my Aldi weekly shop and have a Costa all in one place – it was great. Well done to the team. You made a great first impression.”
Susan Williamson added: “I thought it was brilliant. Loads of people there but still plenty of space. The garden bit is good too.”
Ashleigh Price said: “Till queues were horrendously long, but 100 per cent expected for opening day and the staff got through everyone so quickly. Store itself is fab, and the Garden World has some great bargains.”
Sally Harrison said: “Lovely shop, pleasant staff,” while Kerry Dainty added: “It was rammed but got loads of good stuff,” and Bernadette Reid said: “Really good, staff were very friendly.”
Sue Gray said: “Me and hubby went; lovely, friendly staff Garden World really cheap.”
David Jones said: “More jobs for Tamworth – what’s not to like?”
One of the staff members, Tracie Mclaughlin, said: “I’ve not long finished my shift, was very busy but we all worked hard to keep the shelves full. We had some lovely customers and there was a lovely atmosphere.”
Store manager Jack added: “It’s a Home Bargains flagship superstore. Along with all the usual Home Bargains razzmatazz, It’s going to include a full garden centre, selling plants, garden furniture, decking; you name it we’ll have it.
“It’s going to have a bakery with freshly-cooked breads, cakes and pastries cooked on site throughout the day, also full frozen and chilled aisles compared to the usual small selection we have in most stores. This will all be spread across a whopping 33 aisles and that’s not including the outside garden centre!
“There’s nothing quite like the buzz of opening a new store. A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into the new site, alongside such a fantastic team. I am exceptionally proud of everyone.
“I recently joined Home Bargains, just in January this year, after previously working as a manager for Iceland. I’m delighted to be part of this new team.”
The new Tamworth store will join over 575 outlets across the UK. The 37,000 sq. ft store will offer shoppers a range of products, including homewares, health and beauty essentials, sweets, snacks and drinks, as well as fresh and frozen food. The store will also feature its own garden centre and a fresh bakery.
Some of the aisles include seasonal, living, kitchen, pet care, hardware, chilled, frozen and poultry.
It will also be donating £2,000 to local charity, Simon’s Heroes, which aims to improve the quality of life and make a positive difference to local children in need.
