New nonprofit aims to provide Louisville community with place to borrow household tools

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new initiative in Louisville will make it possible for individuals to hire family products, gardening equipment and extra.

The Louisville Device Library, situated on Logan Street in the Shelby Park neighborhood, is built a local community lending library for just about everything but textbooks. It will have a huge selection of instruments that persons may perhaps have to have to help in the garage, kitchen area, yard, backyard garden and much more.

“We are 100% donated, 100% volunteer run and 100% donated,” stated Katherine Keeney, founding volunteer for the library. “We are a lateral variety of leadership group in the way we are all volunteer-operate. So we have 500-600 resources now but we are hoping to expand that quantity exponentially and get all of our volunteers associated.”

People ought to turn into a member of the library in buy to borrow, and when executing so, the library asks for a $120 donation. That isn’t binding, however, due to the fact the strategy is to be available across economic backgrounds.

“The goal is to make membership readily available for all although retaining a sustainable lending library open for our local community,” the library’s membership packet reads. “We do this by suggesting a $120 once-a-year membership contribution. If this is not in your toolbelt, we also supply a sliding scale possibility dependent on .1% of your once-a-year cash flow (ex: if you make $40k/year think about $40). If a money contribution does not match your wheelbarrow, discuss with a librarian and take into account membership through provider as a result of volunteering.”

Keeney explained the new concept is some thing Louisville needs, specifically offered the standing of quite a few of its properties.

“We are in a metropolis in which a great deal of men and women are renovating outdated homes, wherever a whole lot of folks need to have access to things,” she reported. “And we are joyful we are equipped to deliver that.”

Almost everything is borrowed on a 7-working day calendar, and even though there are no obligatory late charges, the library asks for a donation if one thing is retained previous its thanks date.

“It is really a nonprofit lending process,” Keeney said. “It functions incredibly equivalent to a e-book library, but instead of publications, you check out resources.”
